The Pobjoy Mint has released an exciting new series of coins featuring Egyptian gods to commemorate 250 years since the birth of British Egyptologist Dr Thomas Young. The first coin in this series features the goddess Isis.
Isis is known for her magical abilities and wisdom, and is considered one of the most important goddesses in ancient Egyptian culture, as a protector of women and of her husband Osiris. She was originally a secondary figure to Osiris, but gradually became more important in Egyptian religion becoming the Queen of the Universe and Cosmic Order after thousands of years. By the time of the Roman Empire, Isis had become the controller of fate itself.
This 2023 Isis coin contains 1oz of 999 fine silver, with a mintage limited to only 5,000 coins. On the obverse Isis is displayed with her wings spread, her name in hieroglyphics appearing in a rectangle. In the background are typical Egyptian decorations with hieroglyphics and a 'P' privy mark exclusive to Pobjoy Mint coins.
The reverse displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the coin is backed by the Sierra Leone government and is considered a sovereign coin.
