King Charles III Gold Sovereign

The King Charles III gold Sovereign marked a huge change for the series following the 70 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and saw multiple special issues to mark such a special moment in British history. Of particular note, 2023 saw two Charles III Sovereigns issued, the first with a date of 2022 in memoriam of Her Majesty, and then a 2023-dated Coronation Sovereign later in the year.

The effigy used on the King Charles III Sovereign coins sees His Majesty facing left, following the tradition of subsequent monarchs facing the opposite direction to their predecessor. The design by Martin Jennings has been very positively received, and is used on Charles III Sovereigns, as well as all other official UK coinage produced by The Royal Mint.
