The Half Sovereign was originally an English coin, produced between 1544 and 1604, under Queen Elizabeth I. After issues ceased it wasn't until 1817, following the Great Recoinage, that the Sovereign, and it's smaller half-sized version was re-released in the forms they are famed for today.
Italian medallist Benedetto Pistrucci created the iconic image of St. George slaying a dragon, that would feature unaltered on almost every Sovereign and Half Sovereign going forward. A Half Sovereign weighs approximately 3.99 grams, and is made using 22-carat gold.
To this day, the bullion Half Sovereign coin is struck with the same design as the original 1817 version, and is a very popular small gold coin for investment purposes.
