This gold Sovereign features a shield on its reverse (commonly called the 'Shield Back'), rather than the usual Sovereign design of St George slaying a dragon.
Queen Victoria's 'Young Head' portrait appears on the front (obverse) side of the coin. The W.W. engraver mark appears at the bottom of the Queen's neck, denoting sculptor William Wyon.
