The Windrush 50p gold coin commemorates 75 years since the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush, a ship that brought Caribbean-born passengers to the UK in 1948. It pays tribute to the significant contributions of these individuals and subsequent generations in shaping modern British culture and society. The design by Valda Jackson features two smartly dressed individuals from the Windrush generation against the backdrop of the Union flag.
The coin serves as a reminder of an important period in British history, when the UK faced economic challenges and labour shortages after World War II. It honours the resilience and determination of those who sought a new life in the 'mother country' during that time.
The 75 Years of the Windrush 50p coin contains 15.5 grams of 22 carat gold minted to a proof finish. It comes in a beautiful Royal Mint box and is accompanied by an informative booklet which highlights the arrival of Windrush and what it represents to Britain in terms of migration, diversity, and national identity.
Production of this proof set has been limited to only 75.
Following the changes to international shipping after Brexit, orders to the European Union under €1,500 will be sent with Colissimo, in collaboration with national postal services across Europe. Orders greater than €1,500 (up to €40,000) will be sent by FedEx.
