The 2023 United Kingdom Silver Proof Commemorative Coin Set

The set features five of the most significant coin issues from the forthcoming year celebrating key icons and anniversaries in British cultural history. Each coin is struck to proof standard in 925 sterling silver, they are presented together in a beautiful Royal Mint case along with a booklet that explores the themes of each coin. The coins are:

The 75th Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III
King Charles III will celebrate his 75^th birthday on the 14^th of November 2023 and to mark this event in the life of the new king The Royal Mint’s Dan Thorne designed this £5 silver coin with an work personally approved by His Majesty. The edge of the coin is plated in fine gold and inscribed with the text ‘RESTORING HARMONY WITH NATURE’.

Celebrating the Life and Work of JRR Tolkien
This £2 silver coin celebrates the life of J.R.R. Tolkien, a giant of English literature and the father of fantasy fiction writing who died 50 years ago this year. It features his self-designed monogram surrounded by a runic band and his year of birth and death. The edge of the coin is plated in fine gold and inscribed with the text ‘NOT ALL THOSE WHO WANDER ARE LOST’ taken from a poem ‘The Riddle of Strider’ which appears in the fellowship of the ring.

Celebrating the Centenary of Flying Scotsman
The world’s most famous train and symbol of the age of steam celebrates 100 years of operation in 2023. This £2 silver coin is beautifully designed by John Bergdahl and features the edge inscription ‘LIVE FOR THE JOURNEY’.

75 Years of the National Health Service
Consistently rated as the most trusted institution in Britain the National Health Service celebrates 75 years of "Universality, equity, and quality of care". This proof 50 pence coin designed by Alice Lediard represents a tribute to the incredible dedication of NHS workers, past and present.

75 Years of the Windrush Generation
HMT Empire Windrush sailing from Jamaica docked at Tilbury in Essex 21 June 1948 and started a process which would transform Britain into the modern multicultural society it is today. To celebrate the generations which moved to the UK this 50 pence coin features a design by the artist Valda Jackson showing two of the ship’s passengers against a backdrop of the Union flag.
